'Giant Steps'

Solo piano free form improvisation by Glen Charles Halls

This recording features Canadian Jazz pianist Glen Charles Halls in a very unique performance of Giant Steps, by John Coltrane. Giant Steps in reknowned as a 'chops buster' for jazz musicians. Halls takes a different approach. The chord changes are smoothed over and the harmonic rhythm becomes almost non-apparent.

Play the song

The boundaries between different key areas and chords becomes highly blurred. Halls also modulates the song to many different keys during the performance, perhaps even all 12 of them! Throughout we hear fluid right hand lead line improvisation in this truly modern rendition of the 'standard' jazz benchmark.
